Hours of Operation: The Recycling Center is open each week Monday through Saturday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Summer hours vary from year to year, so check with the township office or the Transfer Station/Recycle Center for specific times. The Recycling Center is closed all day for the New Year (Monday, January 2, 2012), Memorial, Independence, Labor, Thanksgiving. Christmas closure will be Saturday, December 24th (closed all day). Recycle Center will be open regular hours Monday, December 26th, and New Year Eve, Saturday, December 31st. Why Recycle? Washington Township, by ordinance, requires residents and businesses located in the Township to recycle.Recyclable items include cans, glass, plastic bottles (#1 and #2) and newspaper, cardboard (corrugated), leaves and brush. Benefits: The largest benefit of recycling is the overall reduction of refuse going to the landfills. If everyone recycled, the amount of waste going to our landfills would be drastically reduced, thereby reducing the need for more landfills or landfill expansions. Also, in theory, it would lower our cost because new landfill construction costs would not be passed on to the consumer. Residential Recycling: The refuse haulers in Franklin County provide recycling as part of their regular service to you. If you have curbside pick-up, you are paying for recycling whether you use it or not. So why not use it? Every two weeks, put your cans, glass, plastic bottles (#1 and #2) and newspaper out at the curb. Your hauler can provide a schedule of recycling pick-up dates if needed. Business Recycling: Your haulers will provide a separate container for cardboard. In addition, office- paper, lunch room cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and newspaper should be recycled. Most businesses have other materials that could be recycled outside of the required items. Do an inventory and determine what else could be recycled at your business. In the long run, you may save money for your company by recycling or perhaps even generate an additional revenue source. Recycling Containers: For $14, Washington Township residents can obtain a can at the township office at 13013 Welty Road. Stop by during regular working hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents of other municipalities should call your municipal office and ask if they have containers available. If a container is not available, contact your hauler and ask what container is acceptable for pickup and buy one at any retail outlet. Recycling Facility: The Washington Township Recycling Center, located at 12725 Buchanan Trail East (Route 16, just east of Red Run Park) is available to all residents, non-residents and businesses in the area. Cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles (#1 and #2), newspaper and cardboard can be recycled at the center at no charge. The Washington Township Transfer Station, 12721 Buchanan Trail East, accepts tires, leaves and brush, and appliances for a fee. These items are then recycled. Scrap metal and car batteries are also accepted and recycled. There is no fee to dispose of these two items. Household items such as clothing, rugs, etc. can be placed in the large trailer at the Transfer Station - they must be bagged - for recycling at no charge. Both facilities are open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. with the exception of Thursdays, when both the recycling center and transfer station are open until 7 p.m. in the summer. Check for exact evening dates and times by calling the township office or the Transfer Station facility. You do not have to be a township resident to use these facilities. They are available to everyone. Recycling at our facility is free of charge to the general public.
Recycling Guidelines: The recycling workers at the center would like to request your cooperation with the materials being recycled by following these guidelines. · Please take the lids off of all bottles, both glass and plastic, especially soda bottles. · Rinse out cans and bottles before recycling. · Empty cans and bottles of leftover liquids and solids. · Newspaper is recycled for use as paper again, insulation or animal bedding. In all three cases, dry newspaper is required. Please keep newspaper as dry as possible. · Tying newspaper with string, wire or rope is not necessary. We would prefer that you just place your newspaper in a brown paper grocery bag. The bag is recycled right along with the newspapers. · Magazines are currently being recycled at the Washington Township facility on a limited basis. Household magazines should be placed with your newspapers or placed separately at the recycling center. Large truckloads of-magazines cannot be accepted at this time. · Syringes are NOT recyclable, even though they are made of plastic. · The following items are NOT being recycled and should be placed with the trash: aluminum foil, aluminum pie pans, window glass, light bulbs, glassware, drinking glasses, cereal boxes, beer and soda boxes, household batteries, Styrofoam, food items, plastic bags, margarine tubs, plant tubs, waxed milk cartons, candles, and hard-back books.
