Washington Township Receives $1 million Multimodal Transportation Fund Grant

Washington Township, PA – On November 12, 2019, the Washington Township Board of Supervisors was notified that it had been awarded a $1 million Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF) grant for the continued extension of the Washington Township Boulevard.  The grant was one of 141 awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) for multimodal transportation projects throughout the Commonwealth. The MTF grant funds will assist the Township in continuing its efforts of constructing a major relief route that provides improved connectivity, addresses existing safety concerns, and provides transportation infrastructure to support new commercial, housing and retail development in the greater Waynesboro community.

“This project has been an ongoing priority for the Township. On behalf of the Board of Supervisors, I would like to thank our state elected officials, especially Senator Mastriano, for their continued advocacy and efforts in helping to secure this grant,” said Chad Reichard, Chairman.

“These are important projects that will bolster community safety and bring new life to an important property,” said Senator Doug Mastriano (R). “Anytime a municipality receives grant funding, it is a win-win situation for the 33rd Senate District – it shows that our local governments and stakeholders are forward thinking with their initiatives, foresight and planning.”

The grant will help the Township continue the progress it has made over the last decade on the construction of a large-scale municipal transportation relief route known as the Washington Township Boulevard.  Once complete, the Boulevard will provide an important alternate route around Waynesboro, relieving congestion along State Route 16 (SR 16). The improvements to be funded by the MTF grant include paving from Gehr Road (T-384) to Tomstown Road (SR 2015), and promoting multimodal travel through the construction of an 8-foot wide pedestrian and bicyclist path in the right-of-way on the Boulevard.

“One of the main goals of this project is to improve safety throughout the area, act as a main connector from the north to four major commercial areas just outside of Waynesboro, and provide direct access to residential developments in the area,” stated township manager Jeff Geesaman.

The MTF Program is funded through revenue from the 2013 Transportation Bill (Act 89-2013).
